Vancouver Island International AIDS Memorial

The Vancouver Island People Living with HIV/AIDS Society invites everyone to join them in honouring those whom we have lost to AIDS and to stand in support of those in our community living with HIV/AIDS.

The theme for the 2011 Candlelight Memorial is "Touching Lives…". With this theme, the International Candlelight Memorial and Vancouver Island People Living with HIV/AIDS Society wishes people to remember how HIV has touched the lives of so many of us; and how international solidarity has a positive impact on the lives of people living with HIV and affected by HIV worldwide.

Started in 1983, the annual observance of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is the oldest and largest grassroots mobilization campaign for HIV/AIDS awareness in the world.

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is based on four simple principles:

  • to honour the memory of those lost to AIDS
  • to show support for those living with HIV and AIDS
  • to raise community awareness and eliminate stigma related to HIV and AIDS
  • to mobilize community involvement in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
